Fists of Positivity! [Jun. 18th, 2011|03:01 am]

[mood |exanimateexanimate]
[music |Patti Smith]

Pretty much everybody who might be reading this knows this already, but I will be attending UCLA's Moving Image Archive Studies program come September. I wish I could say I've got everything worked out, but I have yet to hear from the housing lottery and need to line up some manner of work-study to help ease the shitpile of loan payments I'm gonna wind up in because of this. Wish me luck, I guess. I'm really effing nervous. I still don't even know how I'm getting down there.

Before I head west, though, I'm stuck here in Conesus for the time being. With that, my annual 3rd of July Party is a go. Last year's attendance was slim, and I doubt this year will be any different. Prove me wrong, people! I like to think that everybody had a damn good time, and hopefully that'll be the case this year. I'll have more specific details closer to the actual date, but I'm sure they'll be pretty much the same as previous year. Start time probably around 5, fireworks at 10 (I think), Ring of Fire sometime before that, all are invited, epic playlist, requests allowed (but I may require an mp3; I never did fully recover my hard drive, though I found my old iPod and that helped get a lot of music back). That seems to be about it. If you have any questions, ask 'em here I guess and hopefully I'll be able to answer them. With that, I hope the party turns out more exciting than this announcement. I think I have a wart on my left ring finger.

This Oscar Thing Again... [Feb. 27th, 2011|08:12 am]

As promised, here's my pre-Oscar rundown of opinions and predictions. I've seen quite a few (though I didn't manage to beat my 2008 record of most nominees viewed, and there's one in a very major category that I've yet to see), but that doesn't mean I know anything when it comes to these predictions. Hell, seeing the nominees probably mucks my predictions up more. In terms of commentary, it's gonna be the usual format, though just to make things a little more fun, I've decided to spotlight two selections for some of my "Shoulda Been Nominated" picks: one whose nomination was within the realm of possibility and one who didn't have a friggin' chance. The former will be listed first, though I imagine in most cases it'd be pretty damn obvious which is which.

So for some reason, this is the second year in a row I'll be posting my year-end lists on January 21st. Thing is, I've had most of these lists largely completed around the more timely time of January 1, but I kept feeling like I had more catching up to do. I still do, but I gotta post these at some point. It'll be just lists for now, but I may posts blurbs later if I'm so inclined. For the time being, though, feel free to start some shit in the comments and I'll be sure to respond. I kinda went all out this year. It was probably the most I've ever been invested in TV, but I still feel like I didn't see enough full series to merit a top 25, so I did a top 15 series, with 10 unranked stand-out episodes from shows that didn't make my list. I've felt generally out of the loop, music-wise, all year, since this is the first year in a long while I haven't been writing reviews either for the radio station or the Examiner or both, but I wound up playing a lot of catch-up at the end of the year. As far as movies go, I'll always feel like I haven't seen enough, but I went to the movies a hell of a lot this year, though considering it was mostly partaking in Rochester's offerings, I'm sure a bunch of more obscure and yet-to-make-it-here films that would otherwise land on here are missing. And just to squeeze in more entertainments, along with honorable mentions, I included a really specific category for each medium to give recognition to stuff I needed a place for but didn't really feel right sticking in the regular lists (and I cheated with a tie in my TV list). This is what happens when I have pretty much nothing to do for a whole year. (Oh yeah, I should write stuff about my life on here sometime.) Anyway, here are my picks for the best 2010 movies, TV, and music that I experienced:

So some of you may have noticed that Keihl posted a list of his two favorite songs for every year since 1960. Let it be known that I DID IT FIRST. If you go a couple months back in my Twitter account, you can find me doing the same thing, except I did one song per year and I STARTED AT 1955. It got Keihl and I talking, and he suggested that I post my list here instead of being all Twitter-selfish, so I decided to make a few updates and do the two song thing this time, with my pick of the song of the decade in bold. Unlike Keihl's, I didn't allow repeat artists, but like Keihl's, it's long, and I PUT IN THE EXTRA EFFORT OF LINKING TO CLIPS. I may offer other lists along these lines at some point in the future, and I would like to see more people doing this 'cause it'll make me feel like I started something, but be warned: it's long and hard, JUST LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT ME. Here it is:

Hey, you guys remember my Conesus house and how I used to have a 3rd of July party there every year? Well, the renters are out of the house now and I'm moving back in this weekend, so the party is on this year. Consider this an open invitation. I know at this point so many of the regulars live elsewhere, so it sorta bums me out to post this here knowing that, among others, the likes of Keihl, Toby and Ursel probably won't be able to make it (though I'm selfishly hoping all of you ferry yourselves up here somehow, but I realize there are many barriers to that situation). But anyway, anyone who can make it is welcome, and as always, I'm taking requests for music, though this time, since I'm having a hard enough time recovering the music I lost in my hard drive crash, I'll need to be provided with the mp3(s). Lest you think that hard drive crash had a negative effect on my ever-expanding party playlist, let me just say it'll probably wind up being about three days long, so you can put those fears to rest. I haven't done much else in terms of planning yet, since it's odd even thinking about this party while not currently living there, I assume it'll start sometime around 5PM. Anyway, that's about it for now. Post any questions or requests you have here or contact me in one of the many other means of modern communication through which I can be reached. Also, anybody in the Rochester area wanna get me a job?

If you recall last year, I was quite proud of my OscarQuest, where I managed to see all the widely-distributed feature nominees and packed all that experience into an Oscar entry. Well, I failed my OscarQuest this year, but I'm a creature of habit, so I will offer another set of predictions and opinions in anticipation of tonight's ceremony. Unfortunately, along with my usual "Will Win," "Should Win," and "Shoulda Been Nominated," I shall also have to include a "Need to See" to point out my blind spots.

I finally got around to posting another Examiner post, and no surprise, it's a Best of 2009 list, with 25 albums and 50 songs. I swear, someday I'll give you more details about my London trip. It may be a few months, though, and they'll be really unimpressive.

Here's the last part of the Best of the Decade project, with the ranked lists of Calle and I. Now that this project is over, I'm lost as to what I should listen to. Maybe I should start on playing catch-up for a Best of 2009 list?
